Viking Gods and Warriors

Symbols are cultural shorthand, the signs that conveys layers of meaning about culture. The pagan Vikings used symbols to represent their gods, beliefs and myths. Most of the Vikings symbols we know about were carved on rune stones, swords, axes and other items precious to the Norse people. The Viking sagas refer to amulets warriors wore. Vikings loved decorating items around them, their weapons, bowls, tools and combs. They used symbols in the decorative arts, in weaving, bone carving and jewelry. This is a collection of Viking replica artifacts of the Norse god Odin, the Valkyries, a warrior shield amulet, and a Viking coin showing a long ship.

 Odin’s Axe

Odin is the chief Norse god and the ruler of Asgard. As god of war, warriors, death, fury, ecstasy, and wisdom, Odin governs over victory, death, knowledge and inspiration. Odin is the father of slain viking warriors. A small, miniature axe is a symbol of Odin that these ancient warriors wore as personal jewelry.

 Valkyrie Pendant

Valkyrie pendants were found in several Viking Age women’s graves and probably represent one of the goddesses of the Norse pantheon such as Frigga. Odin's Valkyrie carried the slain warriors to Valhalla. The ‘valkyrie’ pendant artifacts acquired the name in the 19th century when archaeologists applied literal interpretations and highly patriarchal concepts to their finds.

 Viking York Rune Shield Amulet

Theis original of this Viking shield pendant was found in York, England. The rune shield is inscribed with the runic inscription that translated reads ‘Good Health’. The shield amulet is attributed to Odin the god of battle. The amulet was believed to protect Viking warriors from misfortune and harm in battle.

 Danish Ship Silver Penny

A 20mm pewter reproduction of a Viking silver penny of Lind, Denmark. (S1186) The coin displays the symbol of a Viking drakkar ship. A collection of these coins were found in the Viking market-place at Birka, Sweden.
