Product Description

In The Description of Greece, the ancient geographer Pausanias describes the Athena Parthenos: “The statue itself is made of ivory, silver, and gold. On the middle of her helmet is placed a likeness of the Sphinx. . . and on either side of the helmet are griffins in relief. The statue of Athena is upright with a tunic reaching to the feet, and on her breast the head of Medusa is worked in ivory. She holds a statue of Victory about four cubits high, and in the other hand a spear. At her feet lies a shield and near the spear is a serpent. On the pedestal is the birth of Pandora in relief.”
Representations of Athena in contemporary Greek literature, reliefs, and artifacts exist. In the Classical Period, the spear or dory in Greek, is displayed as the symbol of Greece's political and military power. The Greek poet, Homer states "Troy won by dory." In the Illiad and Odyssey Homeric heroes carry two spears. During the Hellenist Period, coins portray Athena on the reverse of its coins.
Two full scale reconstructions of Athena Parthenos exist in North America. In Ontario, Canada, the 1971 Sylvia Hahn sculpture of Athena Parthenos resides in the Royal Ontario Museum. Nashville, Tennessee's full-scale recreation of the ancient Parthenon of Greece contains the second Athena Parthenos. The 1990, Alan LeQuire's Athena Parthenos was installed in the east room of the Nashville's Parthenon. The 41 foot Athena is painted white and covered with 8 ½ pounds of gold leaf. The statue of Nike in Athena's right hand is 6' 4” tall.
This historical set includes two of Greek coins. The top coin obverse displays a replica of a silver tetradrachm of Lysmachos (323 to 283 B.C.). The coin reverse shows helmeted Athena enthroned left holding Nike and resting left with arm on shield and a transverse spear resting against her right side. (Sear 6813). The bottom coin shows a tetradrachm of Ptolomy 1 (302 to 283 B.C.). The reverse shows Athena advancing right brandishing a spear and shield. A small eagle on a thunder bolt is on right. (Sear 7747).
